With all this talk and fear over global warming, how do we know if its actually occurring and what effects it will have on our environment? Many people are dumfounded to hear that there are actually several warning signs of global warming taking place right now which you can see and experience for yourself.

So what are the signs?

Environmental defense teams across the globe are searching for and tracking the warning signs of global warming so that they can be better equipped to counteract and respond to the changes in our warming world. Most changes are calculated as either:

Harbingers

Global Warming Fingerprints

Global warming fingerprints are direct manifestations of a widespread and long term trend toward warming temperatures. Some examples of this happening include:

Heats waves and unusually warm weather for long periods
Melting glaciers
Arctic and Antarctic warming
Oceans getting warmer
Sea level rising
Coastal flooding

Heat waves and unusually warm temperatures in parts of the world lead to an increase in heat related illness and death, especially in urban areas and with elderly or small children. Statistics show and incredible increase in record temperatures of many hot spots in the world.

Studies also show that over the past 150 years, the glaciers have been growing smaller. This glacier melting is due to warming temperatures and it is predicted that the majority of glaciers will be gone by the year 2100.

Global Warming Harbingers

Global warming harbingers are events that foreshadow the different types of events we can expect to see as a result of our warming world. These may include:

Spreading disease
Coral reef bleaching
Earlier spring arrival
Plant and animal range shifts
Plant and animal population changes
Droughts and fires
Downpours, heavy snowfalls and flooding

Harbingers show us many complications that can come from global warming. Warmer temperatures allow mosquitoes and other creatures to spread disease more easily. Earlier springs can cause problems for animals and creatures that migrate as well as complications with plant and animal life. Droughts and fires destroy homes, wildlife and cause death. This is just the beginning of complications which will result from a continuing warming earth due to an excess of greenhouse gases.
